People In Music History
Stockhausen, Karlheinz (b. 1928) German composer, pupil of F. Martin and (in
Paris) of Messiaen. Highly influential in trends of form, sound content, use of
electronics: he was the first composer to have any electronic "score" (or
rather diagram) published, 1956. Later active in exploring spatial
possibilities in music and a measure of free choice by performers, e.g., in
Groups (Ger., Gruppen) for 3 orchestras (and 3 conductors); Cycle (Zyklus) for
one percussion player who may begin on any page (See Cycle). Other works
include Stimmung ("atmosphere", "tuning") for vocal ensemble, stage piece Inori
("adorations" for soloist and orchestra).
